THE CHALLENGEThe founder had built a working stock management app for small shop owners, but it had no name, no look, no voice and no story. The people it was built for, spaza shops, corner stores and informal traders, often run their business from notebooks and memory, and are wary of software that asks for their data. The app needed a brand that felt simple, trustworthy and made for them from the first glance.
THE APPROACHWe started with people, not features. Every decision was tested against one question:
Would this make running a shop feel easier, not more complicated?
From there I built BalaShoppa from the ground up. I defined its purpose, positioning and values, gave it a name, and created the hand-painted logo, colour palette and brand personality. That meant plain language, warm colour and nothing that felt corporate or technical. And one promise shop owners could hold on to:
Your shop. Your data. Your control.
THE WORKIt started as an app with no name. Here's everything I built around it.
Brand strategy
Purpose, positioning, values and messaging, all built around one promise: your shop, your data, your control.
Personality and voice
Helpful, straightforward and human. Friendly and encouraging, never technical, patronising or salesy.
The name
BalaShoppa. In several South African languages, "bala" means count. Shop owners know what it does before they even open it.
App and website copy
Every word a shop owner reads, from the buttons in the app to the pages of the website.
Visual identity
A hand-painted logo and a bold palette of green, red, yellow and navy that feels local and warm, nothing like corporate software.
Social media
I created BalaShoppa's social channels and still create and manage its content today.
IN THE APPOne palette, logo to app
The colours from the hand-painted logo run through every screen, so the app feels as warm as the brand.
Labels anyone can act on
Restock, Sold, Low stock. Plain words that make sense at a glance.
Written for shop owners
"What you paid for it" and "What you charge customers", not cost price and margin.
Privacy, said plainly
Owners choose when and how their records are shared, by WhatsApp, email and more.
Dani transformed BalaShoppa from an app into a brand. She brought clarity to our ideas, built our marketing strategy, and created a voice that truly represents what we're building. Trusting her expertise was one of the best decisions I've made, and BalaShoppa is a far better product because of it.
